Sousa Watching

An association of environmental groups in Taiwan working together on saving the Sousa chinesis will hold the second training course for students and others 31 March/1 April 2007 at Providence University. The first day of the courses includes talks by Yang Sichu of the FormosaCetus Research and Conservation Group introducing cetaceans in general with a more detailed presentation on the Sousa; Dr. Tsai Jiayang, head of the Jhang Hua Taiwan Environmental Protection Union who will introduce marine and shoreline ecology of the area, and Chen Bingheng, Secretary General of the Taiwan Academy of Ecology who will give an overview on the past, current and pending projects in the area that are threatening the Sousa. On the second day the students will spend time at the Taijhong (Taichung) Harbor and Jhanghua (Chang Hua) Industrial Park watching out for the dolphins. The graduates of the course will be given an opportunity to join the “dolphin observation project that will begin the following weekend and continue on into the first week of May.
